Dear all,

A husband gifted his wife a gun on their anniversary. and they talked as follows:

H: Happy anniversary.
(SHE OPENS IT REVEALING A SNUB-NOSED .38 SPECIAL)
W: Some guys bring flowers.
H: Dozen roses ain't got nothin' on six hollow points.
W: You know I already got a piece.
H: Yeah, but yours comes with too many questions attached.
W: Still, think I could take it back? Get some diamond studs? Real ones?
H: No refunds, no exchanges. Also, completely untraceable.
W:Seriously, Eddie.
H: Look, you asked me what I'd do in your situation. A guy like that. Well.
Just be careful.
W:You been under too long. Maybe things start lookin' kinda cloudy, huh?
H: Couldn't be clearer from where I'm standing. Scum out there wants you dead. I'm just evening the odds.
W: Look, I told you before, I don't need protecting.
H: Well, the beauty of a thing like this. You can put it away. Forget about it. Unless the time comes when you need it. Then you decide where you stand.
W: I already know where I stand.
H: Just lookin' out, okay? Diamonds, huh?
(HE MOVES TO PICK UP THE GUN, BUT SHE STOPS HIM FROM TAKING IT)
W: Wait. Lemme think about it. Okay?

The wife is a detective. It seems that they are in a place where any one can attack them.

I can't get the highlighted parts. This is the whole convo and there is no more context about them. IF some context is missing, just give me a hint or a suggestion. like "under"! I don't know if he is working under sombody, but I thought it may have another meaning here.

Thanks a lot.
