Dear all,

What is the meaning of "Jailbait magazines"?

( A foster father was molesting his foster daughter.... He killed here and years later killed himself when he knew that detectives knew everything.

A: Any proof he was molesting her?

B: Jailbait magazines all over the place

I don't know if more context is needed, but I guess it's not a name of a magazine but may be some type of magazines.

Thanks a lot.

It refers to underage girls in a sexual connotation.

If a girl under the age of consent (note the age of consent is different in different countries) is dressed provocatively (by choice or otherwise), she is described as "jailbait".

Bait is something used to lure someone or something towards something else (ie the worm on the end of a fishing line)

Jail is, of course, prison.

So - a provocatively dressed young girl may be very tempting to a man. If he approaches her and/or starts a relationship with her and she is underage, he will go to prison.

I would say that the magazines that were found in the man's house contained sexually explicit photographs of underage girls.

It seems like "minor" but what would "minor magazines" even mean?

Thanks a lot.

Not a teacher

But I believe that jailbait magazines are magazines with photos, probably pornographic, of persons below the age of consent.

Or those which push the envelope of the law, like "Barely Legal" magazine, which features 18 year olds.

From your context, I think that they are magazines that feature child pornography. It is a crime to have sexual activity with a person under 18. It may also be a crime, though I'm not absolutely certain, to possess this type of magazine. Look here for a definition of "jailbait." Jailbait - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bear in mind that it is not necessarily a crime in all countries to have sex with a person under 18. Each country has different laws and most have different ages depending on the sort of sex.

For example (and rather worryingly in my opinion), in The Vatican, which is of course an independent state, I believe the legal age of consent is 12 for heterosexual sex.

Jail - prision
Bait - enticement, temptation.

In the USA, for instance, the age of consent ranges from sixteen to eighteen depending on the state. Sexual activity with someone under that age is a crime for which you can go to prision.

Now:

Jailbait: a poerson under age that could tempt you, but not resisting the temptation could land you in prision.

It's actually the other way around. For instance it is perfectly legal in my state to have relations with a 16 year old. So I could see her naked. But if I took a picture of her, it would be manufacturing child pornography.

There have been cases of stupid teenagers taking photos of themselves with their phones who have been charged with manufacturing child pornography.

No, the age of consent in Vatican is the same as in Italy -- 14 years.

As mentioned upthread, "jailbait" refers to a sexual encounter between an adult and a person under the legal age of consent (which varies from state to state in the US). For example, Bill and Ted are at a neighborhood summer pool party and Ted notices a voluptuous young woman in a very tiny bikini. "Whoa," he nudges his friend, "Look at her! I wouldn't mind throwing her down and...." "Stop right there," Bill interrupts him. "I know her. That's Jill, she lives down the street from me and she's only 14 years old. You're talking jailbait, my friend."

As far as "jailbait" magazines go, there is unfortunately a large selection of illegal independently published kiddie porn magazines available for folks who know how/where to buy them. The actual possession of such magazines will automatically imply to the authorities that all is not well in that household.....or, in other words, anyone who owns kiddie porn magazines is truly sick and possibly a sexual predator.

I am flabbergasted.

This is not the lowest age of consent in Europe. In Spain it is 13 years. 14 is quite common (it is, for example, the age of consent in Germany). It is 15 in Poland. Note that also in the USA there are states (or a state -- I don't remember which or how many) in which 13 years is the age of consent.

It's a common mistake (also here). Vatican has no penal law.

I'm surprised about the Avert website getting it wrong, purely because it's so apparently sociably responsible in its attempts to bring attention to the HIV/AIDS question.

Anyway, apologies for going a bit off-topic.

In 1929, this law was enacted. Art. 3 says, in short, that "in the matters for which the sources [of law] indicated in art. 1 do not provide" the laws of the Kingdom of Italy will be observed. According to the law, this 1996 Italian law became valid in Vatican automatically. Article 5 says that it is illegal to have sex with a person under the age of 14.

That makes sense. Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation
