"This" and "that" in reported speach

    Dear teacher,
    please check my sentences:

    1. The problem was that the lemon was not yellow. This (that?) was a blue lemon. It was the first time in my life that I have seen (saw?) a lemon like that.
(I want to use "this" or "that" instead of "it" because the next sentence starts with "it").

    2. We expected that he would do something special. But this (that?) time (yesterday) nothing special had(?) happened.
(I was told that "this" should be replaced by "that" in reported speach. Is this the case?)

    Thank you

You can alter your sentneces slightly:

    1. The problem was that the lemon was not yellow. Itwas a blue lemon. That (or This) was the first time in my life that I had seen a lemon like that.

    2. We expected that he would do something special. But this (that?) time (yesterday) nothing special had(?) happened.

(I was told that "this" should be replaced by "that" in reported speach. Is this the case?)

    2. We expected that he would do something special, but at that
    time nothing special happened.

    or

. . .by that time nothing special had happened.

    This is OK:

The problem was that the lemon was not yellow. This was a blue lemon. It was the first time in my life that I had seen a lemon like that.

We expected that he would do something special. But this time nothing special happened.
