A woman was intending to get away from a boardinghouse where she was kept.

She knew that she must, as she put it, steal away like a thief in the night, and with this in view she had, on the night of the day when Washbrook took away her ring, tested the stealth with which she could open her bedroom door.

Does it mean she tested a trick how to open the bedroom door?

    NMot a teacher

    Consider this:

Stealth: Marked by or acting with quiet, caution, and secrecy intended to avoid notice.

    It should help,
