    lest

    Hi

A woman wanted to get out of her room:

She had never heard the key being turned,
either at night or in the morning, and finding the door
locked filled her with alarm lest something in her
demeanour had quickened suspicion in her guardians.
Calmer thought assured her that it was probably a
    routine precaution.

I take it to mean that she thinks that probably something in her behaviour made her guardians suspicious?

Yes. In this context, you can substitute that for lest. Look here. Lest | Define Lest at Dictionary.com

    Re: lest

    Not a teacher

    Look atr an alternative option:

She had never heard the key being turned,
either at night or in the morning, and finding the door
locked filled her with alarm for fear that something in her
demeanour had sparkled suspicion in her guardians.
Calmer thought assured her that it was probably a
    routine precaution.

    Re: lest

    . . .had sparkled suspicion. . .
No, that won't do, Manny. Perhaps you're thinking of sparked off.

    Suspicion can also be aroused.

You are absolutely right Rover! I did try to edit it to remove the L, but I goofed it somehow.

Thanks for mentioning it, so that the thread followers can get it right.
