My flatmate and I are having an argument over something.
She thinks the following is ironic and I disagree:
We were watching a film and the main villain was nicknamed pope by everybody. She thinks this is irony.
Also if his surname was actually Pope and he was a villain would this be irony? I said it'd be a coincidence.
Using the name Pope for a villain is irony, yes.
The irony is that the Pope is supposed to be the holiest person on earth, full of good and righteousness. To use Pope as the name of someone who does bad things is ironic. It's a work of fiction - his name was chosen on purpose. It's not a coincidence.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
