(choose the sentence with a similar meaning)

1. In the hope finding the money they didn’t call the police
A They found the money, so there was no need to call the police
B They thought they might find the money, so the police weren’t called
C The knew they would find the money, so they didn’t call the police
D If they found the money or not, they wouldn’t call the police

I chose B but the answer is C.
Anyway, I think none of them is correct. B is poorly written and C is somehow far from the original meaning

For a start, there is a word missing from the original sentence. It should read "In the hope(s) of finding the money, they didn't call the police. It's also missing a comma and a full stop.

As far as the sentence with a similar meaning, I agree with you. Sentence B is closest. C is definitely not right. We do not equate "in the hope of" with "knowing they would".
