    Is this sentence phrased well? Thanks!

    They well understood that the more Turkey became Islamic the easier for them to prevent its joining to the EU.

    I'm not sure about "They well understood..." I would say that you can describe something as "well understood" but used as a verb, it sounds unnatural.

    I would make a few other revisions too:

    They understood well that the more Islamic Turkey became, the easier it was to prevent its joining the EU.
