    IF we use the expression what if followed by phrase, does the verb have to be in past tense?

    What if I told you that.....

    not

    What if I tell you that...

    Note: Assuming, this is happening at present. Say, when you're asking or challenging someone.

    The more secret, confidential, shocking, etc, the information, the more likely I'd be to use the past tense.
