    A question about "first"

I am wondering about the use of the word "first."

    Can one for example write:
First when he moved to a big city, he started to visit theatres.
    or should I write instead,
Not until he moved to a big city, did he start to visit theatres.
Is grammatically correct, for example, this sentence:
First when he entered the shop he understood that he had lost his wallet.

Is grammatically correct, for example, this sentence:
First when he entered the shop he understood that he had lost his wallet.
When he first moved to the big city, he started to go to the theatre. (Note: this suggests that after he had lived there for some time, he did not go to the theatre as often. It also doesn't give any clue as to whether or not he had previously been a regular theatre-goer when he lived in a smaller town.)

It has a slightly different meaning to:

"Not until he moved to a big city did he start to visit theatres." That means that he did not go to the theatre until he moved to a big city but it makes no suggestion as to the frequency or longevity of his new-found liking for theatre trips..

It was when he entered the shop that he first realised that he had lost his wallet.
