the weekend of the thirty first

    Hi

A certain man wanted to arrange a date with a certain teacher. He asked her when she can come, when she's free. He asked:

“Then will you suggest a date?”
“I’d like it to be after half term”
    “And when is it?”
    “The weekend of the thirty-first”

Is it the 31st of the same month? Let's say it's October, so they would meet on October 31st?

It depends. If they both know that half term is in March, then they would understand the date to be 31st March.

Incidentally, your dialogue suggests that half term is the weekend of the 31st, and that the meeting will be after that.

    Later the man says:

‘The weekend of . . . All Hallowse ’en,’ he said slowly. (It's Halloween, right?)
And he was disappointed that he's got to wait so long.

Yes, October 31st is Hallowe'en (from All Hallow's Eve). I imagine he was hoping for a date much sooner than that!

So she wants to meet him on Halloween day, or some other day after Halloween?

It must be after Hallowe'en. She said that the date would have to be after half-term. Half-term is "the weekend of the 31st October" - this doesn't make sense, by the way because half-term in the UK always lasts one week, so it's not clear if half-term begins on the weekend of Oct 31st or ends on the weekend of Oct 31st.

If Oct 31st is the end of half-term then the date will be on November 1st or later. If Oct 31st is the beginning of half-term then the date will be around the 8th November or later.
