    home for the holidays

    Hi

Once, when I was eleven, home for the holidays, Aunt Edith had a Christmas party, and they were all fooling about, kissing under the mistletoe.

Does it imply she came back home from somewhere for holidays?

Not a teacher only a native.

Yes. She had probably been at a boarding school.

"The holidays" in this phrase refers to Christmas and New Years.

In BrE, 'holidays' can refer to a singular holiday period.

I used to spend my summer holidays at my grandparent's cottage in the country.

The AmE New Year's is usually New Year in BrE.
