    give the go-by

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

But being made an honest woman of so to speak, Becky would not consort any longer with these dubious ones, and cut lady Crackenbury when the latter nodded to her from her opera-box; and gave Mrs. Washington White the go-by in the ring. (W. Thackeray, “Vanity Fair”)

give the go-by = turn a blind eye to

Michael and Fleur passing up the centre stairway saw a man not ‘arf a bull” as Michael muttered, whose hand people were seizing, one after the other, to move away with a look of pain…. “Give him the go-by. He’ll hurt you.” (J. Galsworthy, “The Silver Spoon”)

give the go-by = pass on, pass by

    Re: give the go-by

ignore = disregard, neglect, omit, overlook, pass over, pay no attention to, reject, set aside, shut one's eye to, take no notice of
