Which are the correct verbs to use?

Six months later, I visited another house in another location. It was a block of three apartments and each apartment has two storeys, very nicely built, clean and quiet. There was a couple waiting for me at the entrance. When I went closer, I noticed that they were the same couple at the small house I visited six months earlier. I was very surprised and I asked them what happened. The husband told me that he had won a lottery, and bought the apartments after selling their old house.

In the underlined part should it be 'was' or 'is'? I am confused because the other verb is 'has'? Which are the correct verbs to use?

    Thanks.
