    a sound soothing as bubbling porridge

    Outside, one could hear the hoarse, jeering crow of a cockerel and the soft murmuring of the hens (a sound soothing as bubbling porridge) as they fed under the orange and lemon trees [...]

    What role does "soothing" play here?
    Should it be paraphrased this way:
    1. "a soothing sound that is similar to the sound of bubbling porridge"
    or this
    2. "a sound that is soothing me as [the sound of (?)] bubbling porridge does".
