What role does "soothing" play here?
Should it be paraphrased this way:
1. "a soothing sound that is similar to the sound of bubbling porridge"
2. "a sound that is soothing me as [the sound of (?)] bubbling porridge does".

A sound that soothes in the way that the sound of bubbling porridge does.
