a guy to put on top the bonfire

We had Bonfire Night last night. The kids made a guy to put on top the bonfire, and Eddie went out in the garden to set off the fireworks.

What does the words in black mean? Pls.

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
