    Using "as if"

I have a problem when using "as if".
For example, is this sentence from my short story correct?

He was squat and his nose was flattened as if he had been a boxer in his younger years.
Now, I do not know if I should write, "had been" or "was" a boxer?

    or for example,

She was thin and pale as if she had not been eating for days.

He was squandering his money as if he was the richest man on earth.
    and,
He squandered his money as if he had been the richest man on earth.

The villagers could neither read nor write as if they had been living outside civilization.
or, should I write instead, "were living outside..

Now, I do not know if I should write, "had been" or "was" a boxer? "had been" is good here.

    or for example,

She was thin and pale as if she had not been eating for days. "had been" is correct.

He was squandering his money as if he was the richest man on earth. This is better.

He squandered his money as if he had been the richest man on earth.

The villagers could neither read nor write as if they had been living outside civilization.
or, should I write instead, "were living outside. Here both could be correct.
    Bhai.
