Hello, I'm trying to use an idiomatic expression (above) but don't know how to spell the 2nd word: is it mackerel? Please help? Thanks very much!

Holy mackerel!

 I don't know about its status in Am E, but in Br E it's on the way out (perhaps there's such a word as 'archaescent', meaning 'becoming archaic' - if not, consider it coined ;-))

I don't hear or use this expression much, although it is still well known.
There are more popular "Holy ......" expressions used here.
