    noun phrase before relative pronoun

I would like to know which noun of the noun phrase is being refered to when we use the noun phrase before the relative pronoun.

    Example:

    (1) The box of books which is in brown color is very heavy
    (2) The box of books which are in brown color is very heavy

Which one is correct? The "which" in (1) seems to refer the head of the noun phrase while the (2) seems to refer to the closet noun right before the relative pronoun.

Please kindly advise which part of a noun phrase or clause is being referred by the relative pronoun?

    Thanks.

Re: noun phrase before relative pronoun

The relative pronoun is attached to the nearest NP head, and this is "box".

    box is

Re: noun phrase before relative pronoun

In brown color' is not natural English.

The box of books which is brown is very heavy.
The box of books which are brown is very heavy.

It's a lot simpler to say:

The brown box of books is very heavy.
    Or:
The box of brown books is very heavy.
