    hanging in there.

    As I know, "hanging in there" is for "endure something, perservere, stand", but can it be used for someone's doing "so so" like in the following?

    A: So, How are your parents doing?
    B: They're hanging in there.

    Sounds OK to me. The sense is still that they are enduring or persevering.

    Do they use it a lot when you're saying someone else is doing so so? I've never heard of it in that nuance, so it sounded weird.
