    own up (v)

    Dear teachers,

    Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the verb in bold in the following sentences?

    She owned up to stealing the watch as well as to having told a lie.

    own up = confess

    You're correct. You could also say admit.

    You don't actually have to use it as a phrasal verb. Less common, but still correct, is "She owned ...."
