    stem the tide

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

Mr. Bates was powerless to stem the tide of commotion in the classroom. (A. Sillitoe, “ Key to the Door”)

stem the tide = block/ stop the way, counteract, act in opposition to

    V.
