Dear teacher

Apparently I misheard this word, which sounded like 'dumful' and means 'disgraced, doomed, etc'.

I search for 'dumful', it's not a word. I wonder what the actuall word is.

Thanks

Could it have been "dismal"?

No, 'dismal' does not rhyme with (or sound like) 'dumful'. It may be old English, the series I heard this from is 'Robin Hood'.

I don't know, maybe they meant 'dumb fool'. Ha. Apparently I have just figured it out.

English and vowels...I wonder when I'll stop struggling with vowels.

Thanks

Hm. If "dumful" were a word, it wouldn't probably sound like "dumb fool". "Fool" has the long vowel /u:/ in it. The suffix "-ful" has the short vowel /ʊ/. What is the context?

Could it have been downfall?
Are you sure it was an adjective? Can you remember the context?

How about some context. Perhaps it was after a few 'cervejas'.:)

'cervejas' are always welcome!:-D

But the word (or expression) I am looking for is 'dumb fool', I misheard the original. I can't remember the episode of the series I heard this from.
