**This is a translated passage. It is neither intended to express a political opinion nor start a political discussion. I'm just interested in the language.**
A few hundred of government men have been killed to date. Some of them in ambushes set for them by armed civilians and some have been shot dead by their fellows either for refusing to open fire on civilians or trying to escape from the army's ranks due to their objection to its deadly measures against civilians. Until last week there have been only a few officers and soldiers who have deserted with their weapons, among them a handful of high-ranked officers. They appeared before the cameras with an uncovered face and tape-recorded a desertion message encouraging their comrades to do the same. Some news came last week about a military unit which had deserted from the army with its weapons. Yet the credibility of this news is questionable as it could be an invention by the president's opponents aimed at prompting other units to rise up against the president's authority and the forces under his control.

Personally, I'd capitalise President in this case because it is the president currently in office. I'm not sure if there's a rule.
