evolve or develop, back on track

    Which word does sound better?
Changes in the environment cause/ have caused some species to evolve / adapt new characteristics very quickly.

Before the surgery he had lots of pain, but after that he got his health back on track . Is my sentence proper English?

Thank you for spending the time answering my questions.
