    giant metal bear trap

    Mel is asking Jim, her husband about his exes, and he got embarrased saying the following. Is "giant metal bear trap" a metaphor for an animal trap for bears? and Is "chew off" cut off something to get out of it?

    Yes, discussing past girlfriends with your wife is something that is not going to end well. In that sense, the "trap" is a metaphor.

    When an animal is trapped in a trap, often its only manner of escape is to chew off the leg that is trapped.

    Cut off the leg or cut off a rope around the leg? If you cut off let, it's too cruel.

    An animal cannot cut, only chew. The picture is of the bear trying to release itself.

    If a human wants to release an animal from a metal trap, there is no question of cutting a rope.
