    endless

I looked upon my daughter for the first time as she was laid upon my belly, her umbilical cord still attached to me. Her little eyes seemed endless as she looked at me. She was so curiously and wondrously unique.

What does endless mean in the above writing?

    Re: endless

Your guess is as good as mine, Ju.

The mother has clearly coined the word whilst in the grip of deep emotion.

    Thank you.

Could I know the meaning of coined the word?

Invented a new word, or in this case used an existing word in a new way.

    Re: endless

I think she means that she could stare into her baby's eyes forever.

    Re: endless

The problem there is that you've just changed the focus of a basically similar metaphor; if 'endless' doesn't make sense to Ju, nor will 'forever'.

A new-born baby's eyes don't focus; that is, their focus is fixed. This gives them the same sort of detached quality as the war veteran's 'thousand yard stare' - although in the baby's case it's even more extreme

Incidentally Ju, though it wouldn't work here, as eyes are sometimes seen as metaphorical pools, and pools are sometimes said to be 'bottomless' (although they are really not), a look or a stare is sometimes described as 'bottomless'.
