'a variety of food' or 'a variety of foods'?

Which is correct?

Food/foods are one of several examples of words that, depending on context, can be used as countable or non-countable. So, either could be correct depending on context. For example, "Tacos are a variety of food that originate from Mexico. But there were a variety of foods that were prepared for the fiesta."
