    formed up/ fall into

    Dear teachers,

    Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the following two sentences?

    They formed up in three ranks.

    They fell into three ranks.

    If you are speaking of soldiers, the second is more usually, "They fell in in three ranks".
