A reduction in the mouse population can lead to the death of wolves as there won't be enough food for the wolves.

I have a feeling that "reduction of" is more pro-active (it was done by an external force) and "reduction in" is more passive (it happened naturally on its own).

NOT A TEACHER, PROBABLY NEVER WILL BE.
