    if I knew

If I knew, it was impossible to get a student visa, I wouldn't have studied for USLME exams.

    Is my if clause correct?

    Thank you so much.

"If I had known it was impossible..."
This is the third conditional. "When we want to talk about things that didn't happen in the past (imagining what would have happened if things had been different), we use the structure if + past perfect," with would(n't) have + past participle in the other part of the sentence. Quoted part is from Practical English Usage, Michael Swan. Look here for a good explanation. http://web2.uvcs.uvic.ca/elc/studyzo...mmar/3cond.htm
