    fall flat

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

I created varying problems within the domestic framework, and tried to encourage their participation, but it was as thoughthere was a conspiracy of disinterest, and my attempts at informality fell pitifully flat.

fall flat = prove to be unfruitful
