    "Make themselves known"

    "Victims are taken to Pakistanís remote tribal regions along the northwest border with Afghanistan, hundreds of miles from Lahore, before the abductors make themselves known" I want to know in this context what is meaning of underlined sentence

    I believe that it means something like:

    before the abductors reveal their true identities. In other words, the victims do

    not know who abducted them until they reach the remote tribal regions. Then

    the abductors tell the victims who they (the abductors) are.
