    procure (v)

    Dear teachers,

    Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the words in bold in the following sentences?

    I knew that Sadie was a notorious liar and would tell any falsehood to procure herself even a quite temporary advantage.

    She has managed somehow to procure his telephone number.

    I know where I can procure that rare book for you.

    procure = acquire, appropriate, earn, find, gain, induce, obtain, purchase, secure, win

    These valuable coins were procured from a famous collector.

    procure = afford, come by

    He made an immoral living procuring woman for tourists.

    procure = pander, pimp
    V.

    I don't think afford fits in there.

    I agree. I also don't think "pander" fits in the last example. As far as "procuring women for tourists" goes, the person who does it might not be a pimp even. I would say that "acquire" would also fit here.

    What other name is used for people in this line of business?

    Well, a pimp controls a prostitute and takes a cut of the money. The person in this example might just go off and find a suitable prostitute for a client but that prostitute might have a completely different person as their pimp. I don't know of a particular word for someone who finds women for tourists if they're not a pimp, but I wouldn't call them all pimps.

    "Pleasure facilitator" maybe?

    Hmm, I think that suggests a level of propriety which is probably rather out of place in this kind of situation!
