    Difference between "that" and "where"

    Hello everyone,

I have to complete a test and I got stuck in this:

Albany, the town that / where we left in 2003 to move to New York, is one of the most pleasant places I have ever lived.

Which is the right answer ?

    Thank you in advance !

And if it weren't a test, the best way would be to use neither of them.

Re: Difference between "that" and "where"

I feel that the right answer is "that" but I don't know why. And I need to know so I can solve similar problems correctly.

The question is from a practice test - trying to study by myself...

    (1) I believe that you are 100% correct.

    (2) Albany, the town that we left in 2003, is very nice.

    (a) I believe that "that" is a relative pronoun. That is, it is a substitute for

the word in front of "that." And the word in front of "that" is "town." So the

sentence is really "Albany, the town the town we left in 2003, is nice." Of course,

repeating "the town" two times sounds funny, so English speakers use the word

"that" for the second "the town."

    (3) In your sentence, "that" is the object of "left" ( "We left that in 2003"). If "that" is

the object, you can forget it. Many native speakers just say: Albany, the town we left

    in 2003, is nice.

    (4) Where is not a relative pronoun. Some books call it a relative adverb. It =

in which. Look at this sentence:

Albany, the town where I live, is nice.

    In other words:

Albany, the town in which I live, is nice.

I wouldn't, but it seems natural enough to me when others use it.
