    Have or Had

    Hi everyone;

    Sometimes I would like to tell my friends about some things happened in the past.

    For example:

    Doctors who made surgery for my father.

    They have or had taken care of my father.

    I'm so confuse which one of the two words I have to chose also I'm not sure about taken

    So Which one is correct and give me a small guide and explanation.

    Thanks in advance

    It depends on the tense you're using in the rest of the example.

    My father had surgery. The doctors who operated on him took good care of him.
    My father has had surgery. The doctors who operated on him have taken good care of him.
    My father had had surgery. The doctors who [had] operated on him had taken good care of him.

    Simple past: They took care (OR have taken care) of my father.

    The past perfect can be used in several ways. In your example, using "had taken", one might expect to hear/read another more recent past action in simple past form such as: They had taken care of my father before they examined my mother (in this usage the present perfect, 'have examined' cannot be used) . I suggest you review the several uses of past perfect in your text or on the web.

    I'm so confused which one of the two words I have to choose. Also, I'm not sure about taken.

    So, which one is correct and give me a small guide and explanation.

    Thanks in advance
