    A monitor can be a stand-alone piece. A screen is attached.
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    They can mean the same thing, yes. Screen is a general term we use to describe the viewing surface at the cinema, the front part of the TV, a sheet of silk in painting; i.e. it is the flat part you look at.

    A monitor is a general term for a device that allows you to monitor, view or pay attention to sound or visual information. For example, musicians on stage have speakers pointing at them (not the audience) so they can hear what they are playing, and these are called monitors. And when you buy a separate device (for example a 2nd screen for a gaming computer) the whole device is called a monitor, and one of its parts is the screen.
