i would like to know why the word needs is used instead of need in a sentence such as "everybody needs friends" , the "s" is confusing me.

many thanks

"everybody"is third person singular, the verb which follows takes an "s".

(1) The moderator has given you the answer.

(2) May I most respectfully remind you to look closely at the word.

As you can see, there are two words: every + body. As you know, the word

"body" needs an "s": A body needs food and sleep. ("body" sometimes means

a person.)

(a) Many years ago, the English people decided to change "every body"

to "everybody." It has the same meaning as "everyone" [ every + one]

or "every person."
