What are the differences between woman, girl and lady, female?

Let me try:

1. female
stand for woman, girl and lady

2. woman
stand for all female above 18 years of age

3. girl
stand for all female below 18 years of age

4. lady
a very polite way in describing female, girl and woman

Broadly, - but this is an area fraught with sexual poitics. Many women object to be called a lady; some people use 'girl' to refer to a grown woman and are attacked for it. (The actress who said 'I enjoy being a girl' was probably more than 18; but catch Germaine Greer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia singing it - even when she was a model in her twenties .)

In fact, 'girl' is risky after the age of about 10 today; and even in the early '60s when my sister went to 'big school', the head-mistress addressed the girls as 'young ladies'.
