There is a question I have been thinking about for hours and just can't seem to get a right answer. If anyone can help me I'll be very greatful!

Explain the difference in meaning between the following pairs of sentences. The first
sentence is neutral and in the second the word in capitals is heavily stressed.

1, How are you? / How are YOU?
2, Can you lend me one? / Can you LEND me one?

ATTENTION: NOT A TEACHER

(1) Tom: How are you?

George: I'm fine. But I want to know how are YOU?!

Tom: Oh, the operation took five hours, but I feeling better now.

(In other words, how George is feeling is not really important. The important

matter is how Tom feels after enduring a five-hour operation.)

(a) For example, a customer says "Thank you." A wise store owner should

say, "I thank YOU." (Without customers, a store owner would have no store and

no money. Sadly, many store owners and their employees forget this -- until

the store closes for lack of business.)

(2) Martha: I love your new hat. Can you lend it to me?

Mona: Of course. You're my best friend. Here it is.

Martha: I'll return it tomorrow.

***

Martha: I see that you have 20 new hats. Is there a chance that I could buy the

pink one?

Mona: No, darling. It's not for sale.

Martha: Well, then, if you won't sell it, could you at least LEND it to me?

Mona: Why, of course, darling!
