    Please explain to me the meaining of modal "would" in the following context. Thanks you



    The CLN investor would pay cash to the bank to buy the note. The bank would pay the investor regular interest until the maturity of the note

    You can change would pay to customarily paid to get the same meaning.

    Thank you. Do you mean that in official texts like legal docs, prospectus, etc "woud" can be seen as indicating as a rule - pls have a look at the phrase below

    ""Condition 4 provided that early redemption would be triggered by the ....."

    "would" sometimes means "was/were wont to", as Rover_KE has mentioned.

    In your second example,

    "Condition 4 provided that early redemption would be triggered by the .....",

    it looks like the author is simply complying with the rules of the agreement of tenses.

    Compare:

    The bill further provides that defendants will not be criminally responsible for a breach of bail if they can prove to the court they had a reasonable excuse for the breach.
