in either case vs in both cases

Question:
Why does the sentence use in either case not in both cases?

Sentence:
The deaths of two young men whose bodies were found within three hours of each other in Cedar City are under investigation.
The Spectrum of St. George reports the cause of the deaths is unknown, but there were no signs of violence in either case.

There is no difference in meaning between "in either case" and "in both cases". In my opinion "in either case" is better.

I think I'd say:

There were signs of violence in both cases.
There were no signs of violence in either case. (= There were signs of violence in neither case.)
