We would need more context. The main meaning of "to thump" is "to hit" but it's possible it might not mean exactly that. It's not possible to tell without knowing what was going on in that part of the story.

If I were in hospital and two interns came round one morning to hit me, I would very quickly be writing a letter of complaint! :-(

I'm not sure, it's been years since I read it, but I think this might come from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" Does it, shinem?

Or maybe it's the idea of "patting someone on the back" in congratulations. It could conceivably be, therefore, that they came by to congratulate him.

Golly, but context is a nice thing!

Nope, this is a book called Memory Book which I'm reading now. But its language is too complex and I guess Canadian language.

The context is as I said there's a man in a hospital which suffers from loosing memory and this sentence is the first sentence of a new chapter. So it starts as this and goes with that the supervisor of the interns come and say this:

“Ah-hah! He is crowded back there. Bet he can’t
brush his teeth without choking.” She gave them hell for
not checking the back of my throat.

As the meaning of to thump, I couldn't understand what she's talking about. Is she talking about his tonsillar? And could you tell me the meaning of thump again? I think that there's a different meaning from to hit?
