    during a checkpoint

No DUI arrests were made during a checkpoint held in Rancho Mirage.

The checkpoint was held Saturday, beginning at 8 p.m. and wrapping up Sunday morning at 1 a.m. on Highway 111 at Library Way, according to Sergeant Dave Adams of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Are during a checkpoint and The checkpoint correct? Would it be correct to say "during a checkpoint operation" and "The checkpoint operation"?

    Re: during a checkpoint

To me, during a checkpoint operation...The [checkpoint] operation sounds better. I think of checkpoint as a place, so using during sounds strange IMO.

    Re: during a checkpoint

I assume this is US English?
In English a checkpoint wouldn't have the quality of duration, if it did it would be called a temporary checkpoint or permanent checkpoint.
You would say, during a raid, because a raid suggests a temporary event.
Personally I see this as a new use of the word and would not use it in this way.
    Yuk!

This seems to be the normal usage in the US.
