    print before meaning?

He could not “see” words, as words, in his mind’s
eye, any more than he could perceive them as words when
    they were printed before him.

What does print before in this sentence?

It is no more possible for him to do thing A as to do thing B.

I can't climb Mount Everest any more than I can turn into a fish and swim across the ocean. (I can do neither of those things.)

Peter Andre can't sing any more than he can dance. (He can't do either of them.)
