    "His antics turned out to be the nail in the proverbial coffin.

    Did I you the word "proverbial" right?

    Or it doesn't make sense in the context?

    Sounds very native.
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    You could also say '. . .the proverbial nail in the coffin' (I prefer this version).

    Yeah. That's was the part that got tricky for me.

    At first, I thought about using two "proverbial", in front of nail and coffin, but that seemed plain silly.
