What does 'a run in her stocking' mean?

    Hi teachers!

I found an example 'a run in her stocking'. What does that mean?

I mean, what comes to your mind when you hear it? Is there something wrong with her stocking caused by running? I don't understand what it means. Can you please explain it in detail?

    Thank you millions.

A 'run' is a partial tear, a scratch. It's called a run because, instead of staying as a small hole, it tends to extend into a long line.
    (Also called a ladder)

This shows a run. It can start with a small hole or tear. The way the fabric is made means that a little tear quickly becomes a giant flaw -- it "runs" up and/or down the leg from there.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
