    Present Ind vs Past Perfect

    Dear Sirs,
Pls help me to choose correct time

ABCD Company , which occupied the second place in 2009, in 2010 fell down to the sixth place.

may I use Past Indefinite in both parts? Or I need to use Past Perfect to emphasise that the second place was earlier? Is it possible to use Past Perfect when we use exact time?

The best solution, of course, is to divide this long sentence in two, but I very often have phrases similar to this one, which I can not divide.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

I'd say 'held second place', and omit 'down'.

You could use the past perfect for the first verb, but as the sequence is very clear, most poeple would use the past simple in both clauses.

    Thanks a lot!

Should I also omit "the" in the second part? We were always told that ordinal numerals should be used with "the".

We often use ordinals as adverbs without 'the'.

I ran my best time ever, but still came in second/in second place.
I will come out, but I must finish my homework first.

Re: Present Ind vs Past Perfect

May be you can help me one more time?

Major sample choice criteria: clients, who visited the bank branch within last 6 months.

Should I use here Past Indefinite or Present Perfect? I do not know, should I emphasise on a result (they have visited the branch) or it is ok for the survey report just to use Past indefinite as it is a simple narration.

    Thank you very much!

I'll repond to this one, but please start a fresh thread for new questions in future.

Both past simple and present perfect are possible here. As a speaker of BrE I'd be more likely to use the present perfect, as 'the last six months' extends up to the present moment.
