The attitudes and behaviour ____most of the residents of slum areas all over the world are unlike those ____ characterize the upper strata of society.

A) which / what
B) that / whom
C) which / which
D) which / where
E) that / when

Why A, why not C?

The attitudes and behaviour ____most of the residents of slum areas all over the world * are unlike those ____ characterize the upper strata of society.
Another bad question as it stands. Are you sure there is not a verb missing where I have put the asterisk?

Have you missed out a word in the main sentence? If not, then the sentence can't make any sense with any of those choices.

True, but I'd have put the asterisk in a different position! We clearly think there are different words missing.

Would you have put it after 'areas'? If so, I can agree with that possibility.

No, I'd have put it after the first blank space, before the word "most".

I hadn't seen that possibility, but I can now.

I can see the possibility of yours too. I am somewhat suspicious of the original question though, claiming that the given answer is A. I've seen some pretty ropey test questions on this forum but the chances of a test author believing that "...unlike those what characterize the upper strata of society" is correct is somewhat far-fetched. Is there a chance that rather a lot of these test questions are being posted in this format to get us to give the correct answer? Hmmmmm.

This is interesting....

I'm wondering if the reason that it uses "what" is because "those" refers to "slum community" instead of "people," am I correct?

If "what" is wrong, does it mean it should be "who" instead?

In the sentence as it stands, The attitudes and behaviour ____most of the residents of slum areas all over the world are unlike those ____ characterize the upper strata of society, the blanks can be filled best by of and which/that.
