Do I follow my father's footsteps or in my father's footsteps? Would there be any difference?

You follow in your father's footsteps.

You could say you're following your father's footprints if he's left feet marks in the snow or mud and you want to see where he's gone.

If my father was a dentist and I would like to become a dentist as well, could I say "I'll be following in my father's footsteps."?
